How did Beaverbrook make his fortune?

As a stockbroker in Montreal, Aitken made a fortune by amalgamating the entire cement industry of Canada. He then moved to England and was elected to the House of Commons in 1910. As private secretary to Andrew Bonar Law (also Canadian-born), he helped him win the Conservative Party leadership in 1911. An idiosyncratic and successful journalist, he never fully achieved the political power that he sought.
