Is Stobo Castle a real castle?
Stobo Castle is located at Stobo in the Scottish Borders, in the former county of Peeblesshire. The building of the present castle began in 1805 and was completed in 1811 under the supervision of architects Archibald and James Elliot. Stobo Castle is the seat of the barony of Stobo, a feudal lordship that was created in 1577 with origins dating back to the twelfth century. In 1650 (together with Dawyck House) Stobo estate was the first in Scotland to introduce the non-native species of horse chestnut.Work began in 1805 and completed in 1811 and the architects were Archibald and James Elliot whose original plans dated 1803/4 and are framed and hanging within the Castle. When the building was finished with its turrets and battlements in baronial style it received the name of Stobo Castle.

Who lived in Stobo Castle?
The Murray family resided at the principle farm, Hillhouse, where the castle now stands. The names Stobo and Hillhouse seem to be interchangeable, as during the 18th century the property appears on maps variously as Hillhouse, Stobo and Stobo House. The Stobo estate was owned by the Murrays of Tweedsmuir around 1750.

What is the dress code at Stobo Castle?
We have a very informal dress code at Stobo. Most of our guest choose to relax in our fluffy, white bathrobes throughout the day, however we do request that guests dress for dinner. Training shoes and suitable clothing must be worn in the gym and exercise studio and swimwear is required for the wet facilities. Informal dining options at Stobo means that most people choose to eat a relaxed lunch in-between treatments during the day. In the evening, the atmosphere remains relaxed, however guests are asked to dress in a smart/casual manner.
