Our story began in 1571 when Harrogate’s first mineral spring was discovered by William Slingsby. Harrogate soon became a destination for health and enjoyment, with visitors flocking to ‘take the waters’ and experience the spa town’s vibrant social scene. Harrogate’s development as a prosperous and flourishing spa town dates back to the 16th century. William Slingsby discovered the first spring in 1571 in the area now known as High Harrogate. It was named the Tewit Well Spring and the water coming from this spring was found to be medicinal.The town originated in the 17th century as a spa with chalybeate, sulfur, and saline springs. It originally consisted of two settlements: High Harrogate, with the Queen Hotel (1687), and Low Harrogate, where the majority of the 88 springs were eventually discovered.
